Open Water Class Certification Information

Provided Equipment
By The Shore SCUBA provides all life support equipment during pool sessions, including regulators, consoles, buoyancy control devices (BCD), tanks, air, weights, weight belts, compasses, textbooks, dive tables, and personal identification cards (C-cards).

Class Duration
We offer various class options. The standard class lasts 3 weeks and includes one full weekend.
- Each session lasts approximately 4 hours per day
- Classes meet twice a week for 3 hours per session
- Six meetings: 3 pool sessions + 3 classroom sessions (approximately 3 hours each)
Other options available: weekend classes, private sessions, and online courses. Call 919-247-0356 for details.
Preparation
Before you start your diving journey, please ensure you complete the following requirements:
- Complete all liability and medical forms
- Fill out and sign the loan/rental agreement
- Pay all fees in full
- Bring reef gloves or another form of hand protection
- Submit two passport-size pictures or electronic JPG files
Must-Haves for Open Water Participation

Air Included
Air for Open Water Dives is included in the open water fee.

Transportation
Students are responsible for their transportation to and from Open Water dives.

Meals
Students are responsible for their own meals during Open Water dives.

Personal Equipment Required
Mask, snorkel, and fins are required for participation.
Important: Do not purchase equipment until after the first class session to ensure it’s of acceptable quality!
Open Water Suggestions
(Optional but Recommended)

Dive Knife
A crucial piece of diving gear recommended to start familiarizing yourself with its use.
Required for Advanced Open Water!

Compass
A required piece of gear for Advanced Open Water.
Students will receive one during the Open Water class.

Slate
Essential for communication and safety; you'll use it often.

Safety Tube
Required for most dives off the coast of North Carolina.
Note: The above items are recommended but not required for the course.

Open Water Equipment Policy

Equipment Inspection Required
Any student intending to use life support equipment at the Open Water experience that is not supplied by By The Shore must bring that equipment in for inspection beforehand.

Safety Standards
Regulators and tanks must have current servicing, and all equipment must meet PADI and By The Shore's safety standards.

Equipment Failure Policy
Any equipment failure not belonging to By The Shore during Open Water will require the student to return on another scheduled Open Water weekend to complete the course requirements.
Important: This policy ensures the safety of all participants and maintains the high standards of our certification program.
